To celebrate international women’s day, we’re highlighting the success of our very own International Woman, UK General Insurance’s managing director Karen Beales.

Karen has risen through the ranks to become one of the industry’s most recognisable female faces. Not only has Karen grown UK General to double GWP in 4 years, from £170m in 2011 to £390m in 2015, but she leads the company as an innovator and inspiring leader.

Claiming she’s been in insurance since ‘forever’, Karen joined UK General Insurance in 2002 as the technical underwriting manager. She started life in broking and underwriting roles at General Accident plc and Wilby Insurance Brokers Ltd, a position which saw her rise to director level at Wilby’s in 1996.

Having worked in the schemes market for over 20 years, she has astute knowledge of the industry, products and brokers alike. With a BA (Hons) degree in financial services, an Advanced Dip CII (ACII) and serving as an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, there’s not a lot Karen doesn’t know about insurance. A constant source of knowledge, Karen’s open door policy has seen UK General thrive under her leadership.

Her proudest career moment? “It would have to be winning Insurance Times MGA of the year for UK General in 2014 and 2015. To my knowledge we are the first and only company to have ever done that!”

Furthermore, there appears to have been little research conducted into the number of women on senior management boards within the insurance industry. Beales commented “I encourage ladies to strive to achieve their goals and to have a greater voice in senior management and on boards.”
